The Helen Balloon Race & Festival typically takes place in early June, kicking off on a Thursday and running through Saturday. While the races start at sunrise (around 6:30 a.m.), the festivities continue throughout the day with live music, food vendors, and family-friendly activities.

The Helen Balloon Race & Festival starts the day exciting morning launches, making it a must-see event for anyone visiting the area. The launch field is located across the river from Cool River Tubing and the city's river park on the Wilkin's property. To enter the field, go across the bridge at Cool River Tubing and turn left. While most of the balloons will launch at the field, some will launch in various places around town.
The main event is the race, which covers at least 225 miles and usually takes two days. The challenge? The balloons can only move with the wind’s speed and direction. To win, the pilot must find the right height to catch the best wind toward the finish line.
Each balloon has 40 gallons of propane, which lasts about four hours before they need to land and refuel. Several balloons compete, and the winner is the first to cross I-95 or the one in the lead at sunset.
It is important to note that there are no activities scheduled for the middle of the day and all balloon events are weather-dependent and subject to change. It's a good idea to check for updates before heading out!
